WELLSITE GEOLOGY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Satellite communications and real-time web interfaces have changed the face of the oilfield. Increasingly exploration companies are tempted to forgo the services of a wellsite geologist in favor of following real time ROP and gas data on the internet and trusting the mudloggers don’t miss anything. When everything goes without a hitch, this is a workable program. However, when things go wrong, and on most wells they do at some point, there is no substitute for having an experienced wellsite geologist on hand 24/7. Eight hundred feet off prognosis in the Thrust Belt? 200-ft basalt marker bed faulted out in the Great Basin? Green mudlogger logging float rubber as coal in the DJ? Rig hands “boilerhousing” samples? Stuff happens – don’t be a victim of false economy.
